Toremar is an abbreviation for the full company name "Toscana Regionale Marittima S.p.A." The company was founded in 1975 as the successor to a predecessor company and originally belonged to the state-owned Tirrenia Group. This company handles the connections to the islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea on behalf of the state and is thus the successor to the former state postal ship services.

Today, Toremar provides connections to the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, which lie between the Italian west coast and the island of Sardinia in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The largest and best-known of these islands (and therefore Toremar's main area of operation) is Elba, while the company's other destinations include the smaller islands of Pianosa, Gorgona, Giannutri, Giglio and Capraia.

Toremar's main port of departure is Piombino, from where it calls at the three ports of Portoferraio, Rio Marina and Cavo on Elba. Some of the ships continue their journey from Elba to the smaller neighboring island of Pianosa. From Livorno, there are connections to the islands of Gorgona and Capraia, while Toremar sails from Porto Santo Stefano to Giglio and Giannutri. This results in a total of eight routes, which take between 15 minutes and 2 hours and 50 minutes. The frequency of the trips also varies greatly: while up to eleven crossings per day are offered on the main route from Piombino to Portoferraio on Elba, the island of Pianosa is only served once a week. Most routes are served several times a day.

Toremar has a fleet of eight ships, seven of which are conventional ferries of medium size with a capacity of between 500 and 900 passengers. The facilities are limited to a cafeteria; some of the larger ships also have sun decks and play facilities for children. The company's only fast ferry, the "Schiopparello Jet", is used on the main route to Elba and can carry up to 145 people as a passenger-only ferry.
