BN di Navigazione, known as Blu Navy, is an Italian ferry operator connecting the towns of Piombino in Tuscany and Portoferraio on the island of Elba. Since its founding in 2010 with just six daily departures, Blu Navy has grown into an established name in Italy's shipping industry with an excellent punctuality record.
Blu Navy offers 16 daily departures year-round between the ports of Piombino and Portoferraio. The crossing takes about 60 minutes over the 21-kilometre (13-mile) route. The first ferry leaves Piombino at 6:00am, the last at 5:40pm.
The fleet comprises two sister ships: Acciarello (in service year-round) and Tremestieri (spring and summer). Both can carry up to 1,000 passengers and 230 vehicles. The double bridge allows all vehicles to be loaded and unloaded simultaneously in under 30 minutes. The Aethalia also operates on the route as a newer ferry.
A distinctive feature is the external upper car deck, where, subject to availability and approval at boarding, passengers can remain in their vehicle. Prices start at 35 euros for adults. Residents of Elba and Piombino, and those born there, receive discounts, while second-home owners get 30 percent off. Children up to 3 travel free. Check-in is 15 minutes before departure without a vehicle, 30 minutes with one.
