Caledonian MacBrayne, known as CalMac, was formed in 1973 through the merger of the Caledonian Steam Packet Company with the services of David MacBrayne. Its roots go back to 1851. The company is owned, through the holding company David MacBrayne Ltd, by the Scottish Government and is headquartered at Gourock pier.

CalMac operates on Scotland's west coast, in the Firth of Clyde and to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. It calls at more than 50 ports, including 22 major islands, and makes around 162,700 sailings a year. Its fleet includes 37 ferries, among them eleven vessels over 80 metres long, 13 double-ended Loch-class ferries and three passenger-only vessels. Since 1 October 2025 CalMac has been operating under the ten-year CHFS3 contract.
