Fjord Line was founded in 1993 and, with a 21 per cent market share, is Norway's second-largest ferry operator for international passenger and freight traffic. The company is headquartered in Egersund and carries more than 1.2 million passengers a year on routes between Norway and Denmark.
Fjord Line operates ferry connections between Norway and Denmark. The main routes run from Hirtshals to Bergen via Stavanger (16.5-hour crossing), from Hirtshals to Kristiansand, and the Norwegian coastal route Stavanger-Bergen (5.5 hours). In 2008, Fjord Line merged with Master Ferries and put the high-speed catamaran HSC Fjord Cat on the new express line Hirtshals-Kristiansand.
The fleet comprises the HSC Fjord Cat (built 1998, one of the fastest RoPax ships in the world), the MS Stavangerfjord (2013), the MS Bergensfjord (2014) and the Oslofjord. The MS Stavangerfjord and MS Bergensfjord are the world's first and largest cruise ferries (31,678 GT) originally powered exclusively by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 23 per cent and sulphur emissions by 100 per cent.
Due to sharply rising LNG prices caused by the energy crisis, both ships were converted to dual-fuel propulsion (LNG/MGO) in 2023, allowing them to switch between LNG and marine gas oil. In 1998, Fjord Line took over the MS Jupiter and the Bergen-Newcastle route from Color Line. On board there are cabins, restaurants and entertainment facilities.
