Grimaldi Lines is part of the Grimaldi Group, a private shipping company owned by the Grimaldi family and based in Naples. The company was founded in 1947 and is one of the most established ferry operators in the Mediterranean. The family's roots in shipping can be traced back to 1348.
Grimaldi Lines operates 38 ferry routes in the Mediterranean, connecting Italy with Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, Greece, Tunisia and Morocco. Greek routes are served under the Minoan Lines brand, Baltic Sea connections under Finnlines, and routes to the Balearic Islands under Trasmed. The Grimaldi Group owns more than 130 ships, around 120 of which it holds outright.
Grimaldi Lines operates 15 modern ferries, including the flagships Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona. Together with their sister ships Cruise Europa and Cruise Olympia, these are the largest Italian-flagged ferries and can carry up to 3,500 passengers. They are the first Mediterranean ships to achieve zero emissions in port. Other vessels include the Cruise Smeralda, Zeus Palace, Cruise Olbia and Cruise Ausonia.
The Grimaldi brothers started out in cargo shipping in the post-war years and were quick to recognise the demand for passenger transport on Mediterranean–South America routes. In 1969 they launched a scheduled service between Italy and the United Kingdom for vehicle transport. Between 2006 and 2008 the group acquired Finnlines and Minoan Lines, followed by Minoan Lines Adriatic in 2025. On board there are cabins, restaurants and entertainment facilities.
