Hy-Line Cruises (officially Hyannis Harbor Tours Inc.) was founded in 1962 by brothers Richard and Robert Scudder together with E. Raymond Taylor. The Scudder brothers, both graduates of Massachusetts Maritime Academy, started out with one boat and three employees. The company is still run by the Scudder family today.
The company operates the second-largest passenger ferry service between Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket (after the Steamship Authority). The service began in 1962 with the "Prudence" (built around 1911), with the Scudder brothers taking turns as captain. Seasonal ferry services to Martha's Vineyard began in 1970, followed by Nantucket in 1972 through the purchase of the Nantucket Boat Company.
In 1996, Hy-Line became the first company to offer a high-speed service to Nantucket, adding a fast ferry for the Martha's Vineyard route in 2003. Today the company employs around 250 seasonal staff, with nearly 90 working year-round. All ferry services are passenger-only (bicycles for a fee), as the Steamship Authority holds the statutory monopoly on car ferries.
Ferries run regularly from Hyannis Harbor on Cape Cod to both islands. There is also an inter-island ferry service between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Alongside its regular ferry services, the company also offers harbour tours and other cruises.
