İDO, in full İstanbul Deniz Otobüsleri — Istanbul Sea Buses — was founded in 1987 by the Istanbul city administration. Privatisation followed in 2011, when operations passed into private hands for 30 years. The company is based in Istanbul.
Its core business lies in the Sea of Marmara and on the Bosphorus, where İDO forms part of the city's public transport network. It also runs crossings between Turkey's Aegean coast and the offshore Greek islands.
The fleet numbers around 103 vessels. These include about 25 sea buses carrying 350 to 450 passengers, ten fast ferries each carrying 1,200 passengers and 225 vehicles, 18 conventional car ferries, more than 30 commuter ferries, one large passenger ship, and operational vessels. This makes İDO primarily a waterborne public transport operator, with its timetable integrated into Istanbul's transport network.
