Kume Line (Kume Shosen) was founded in 1950 by Seiji Toubaru and has nearly seventy years of experience in the shipping industry. Seven years later, the company began passenger services and became one of the most respected ferry operators in Okinawa. Head office is in Naha, at the southern tip of Okinawa Prefecture.

The fleet consists of two vessels: the larger, faster Ryukyu carries 350 passengers at a top speed of 19 knots, while New Kume Shima holds 337 people and reaches 16 knots. Both ships carry passengers, cargo and vehicles.

The ferry Ryukyu sails from Tomari Port (Naha) with a direct journey time of 170 minutes, or 200 minutes via Tonaki. New Kumeshima takes 195 minutes direct or 240 minutes via Tonaki. There are two round trips a day, some calling at Tonaki island en route. A one-way fare takes 3.5 to 4 hours and costs 3,450 yen, with a return costing 6,560 yen.

The Naha-Kume-Tonaki route carries passengers through Okinawan waters to the remote islands of Kumejima and Tonaki off the west coast. Tickets can be bought at Tomari Port or online.
