The company was founded in 1987 under the name "Antilles Trans Express" and initially ran fast ferries between the French overseas departments of Guadeloupe, Les Saintes and Marie-Galante. Its head office is at the Bergevin ferry terminal in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe. In March 2024 the company was acquired by the German ferry group FRS.

Since 1987, FRS Express des Îles has been the leading shipping services provider in the Guadeloupe archipelago. The service expanded to Martinique and Dominica in 1989, with Saint Lucia added in 1994. Besides its routes to Les Saintes and Marie-Galante, the company also runs international crossings to Dominica, Martinique and St Lucia.

The fleet comprises 4 high-speed vessels with air-conditioned lounges and open upper decks. L'Express des Îles is one of the largest ferry operators in the Caribbean, carrying more than 700,000 passengers a year between the French Antilles and the English-speaking Caribbean islands.

FRS, headquartered in Flensburg, Germany, is an international ferry group that has grown from a regional passenger ferry company into a leading ferry-services specialist. The group operates around 70 ships and employs more than 1,500 staff from over 40 countries. The integration of L'Express des Îles strengthens the FRS group's Caribbean network.
