Naviera Armas Trasmediterránea is Spain's leading shipping group and one of the major players in the European passenger and Ro-Ro shipping sector. The company was founded in 1941 on Lanzarote by Antonio Armas Curbelo and is headquartered in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The routes connect the Canary Islands with one another (Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma) as well as with mainland Spain, Ceuta, Melilla, Morocco and Algeria. The company carries more than 3.3 million passengers a year to 26 national and international destinations.
The fleet comprises 21 ships: 6 fast ferries (including the modern Volcán de Tagoro and Volcán de Taidía), 12 ferries and 3 Ro-Ro vessels. The fast ferries were acquired in response to competition from Fred. Olsen Express. The company's history began with the transport of salt and cargo on wooden-hulled boats between the islands.
Antonio Armas Fernández, son of the founder, now runs the company and introduced the first roll-on/roll-off ships in the Canary Islands in 1975. In 1995 the company entered the passenger and freight market and expanded its fleet with new ferries from Vigo. In 2008 the service to Portimão, Portugal via Madeira began.
