Norled is a subsidiary of Stavangerske Dampskibsselskab and one of Norway's largest ferry and fast-ferry operators. The company connects the Oslofjord in the southeast with Troms, a county in northern Norway, and has invested heavily in environmentally friendly technology and new types of vessels.
Norled operates 80 vessels, offering ferry and fast-boat services from the Oslofjord all the way to Troms. The fleet runs under contract with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Kolumbus and Skyss in Rogaland, Vestland, Sunnmøre and the Trondheim Fjord. The company runs both car ferries and fast boats.
Norled is a pioneer in electric ferries: the MS Ampere, the world's first fully electric ferry, entered service in early 2015 and crosses the Sognefjord around 34 times a day (17 return trips), with capacity for 360 passengers and 120 cars. The CO2 reduction is estimated at 2,150 tonnes a year - a cut of around 95% compared with conventional diesel ferries.
Norway now has around 80 electric shuttle ferries in operation, and Norled has developed unique solutions. The fast boats MS Baronessen and MS Baronen have been converted to battery power. Three new battery-hybrid ferries will enter service in 2027 on the Stokkvågen-Lovund and Stokkvågen-Træna routes and are expected to cut emissions by up to 90 percent.
