Sado Kisen was founded in 1913 and is the leading ferry operator in Niigata Prefecture. The company runs two routes: the main link between Niigata Port and Ryotsu Port with large car ferries and high-speed jetfoils, and the route between Naoetsu Port and Ogi Port with a medium-sized car ferry.

The car ferry between Niigata and Ryotsu takes 2.5 hours one way and costs around 2,900 yen per person, or roughly 19,000 yen for an average car. Ferries run about every 3 hours. For faster travel, the jetfoil crosses in just 67 minutes for around 7,000 yen.

The car ferries offer various comfort classes and allow vehicles to be transported to Sado Island - Japan's fifth-largest island, known for its rich history, natural beauty and the annual Earth Celebration festival.

The ferry terminal in Niigata sits next to the Toki Messe complex, 15 minutes by bus from Niigata Station. From Tokyo, Niigata is 89 minutes away by shinkansen. Online reservations can be made up to two months in advance and up to 30 minutes before departure.
