Safe Way Maritime has run ferry services between Roatán Island and La Ceiba since 1994. The company was founded by Jerry Hynds together with John and Danny McNab, and the first crossing took place on 29 May 1994. In 2006, the fleet was upgraded with the new catamaran Galaxy Wave.
The Galaxy Wave ferry crosses the 40 miles (64 km) between La Ceiba port on the Honduran mainland and Roatán Island. There are two daily departures from La Ceiba, at 9:30am and 4:30pm, and from Roatán at 7:00am and 2:00pm. The crossing takes just 75 minutes.
Designed by Incat Crowther (Australia) and built by Gulf Craft (Louisiana), the 46-metre catamaran holds 460 passengers: 250 seats in the air-conditioned economy cabin below deck, 150 seats on the open upper deck, and 60 seats in the air-conditioned first-class cabin. On board there's a small cafeteria with snacks and drinks, toilets and LCD TVs.
The terminal in La Ceiba is at the Muelle de Cabotaje in the east of the city. Parking is available for about 8 USD per day. Roatan Ferry has also extended its service to Guanaja Island, now serving Clark's Cay and Dunbar Rock Resorts.
