SAOS Ferries was founded in 1975 by residents of Samothraki island and is named after the island's highest mountain, Mount Saos. The company is based in Alexandroupolis in Thrace and today runs a three-ship fleet on routes to the Dodecanese and Cyclades islands.
After many years running only routes to Samothraki and the Sporades, the company now also connects the popular islands of the Dodecanese and Cyclades. Destinations include Kalymnos, Leros, Leipsoi, Patmos, Arkioi, Agathonisi, Samos Pythagoreio, Rhodes, Halki, Symi, Tilos, Nisyros and Kos.
The fleet consists of two ferries and one speedboat: the Saonisos (built 1994) carries 341 passengers and 50 vehicles and runs on the Cyclades. The Stavros (built 2000) holds 587 passengers and 100 vehicles and serves the Dodecanese. The speedboat Zefyros has indoor and outdoor seating areas but no vehicle garage.
The former Alexandroupolis-Samothraki-Limnos route, which SAOS Ferries operated for over 20 years, is now run by Fast Ferries with the vessel Adamantios Korais.
