The ferry services run from Kagoshima Port North Pier to Tanegashima (about 1 hour 35 minutes) and to Yakushima (about 2 hours). The crossing between Tanegashima and Yakushima takes 50-55 minutes. The ferries call at Kagoshima and Ibusuki on Kyushu, at Miyanoura and Anbo on Yakushima, and at Nishinoomote on Tanegashima.
Direct sailings run several times a day year-round, with increased frequency in summer. Departures are every 1-3 hours (less frequent in winter), with about 13 weekly sailings between Tanegashima and Yakushima. A one-way ticket costs 12,700 yen, and a return ticket 23,300 yen (return within 7 days).
Tickets can be bought at Kagoshima New Port or from LOPPI machines in Lawson convenience stores (Japanese language skills required). Contact: 099 226 0128. In poor weather conditions such as typhoons, sailings may be cancelled at short notice.
