Tirrenia - Compagnia italiana di navigazione is one of the oldest and best-known Italian ferry companies, with more than 80 years in operation. The company was founded in 1936 and is headquartered in Naples and Cagliari. Its name derives from the Tyrrhenian Sea, its main area of operation.

Tirrenia connects mainland Italy daily with Sardinia and Sicily. The ferries run from Genoa, Naples and Civitavecchia to Sardinia (Porto Torres, Arbatax, Cagliari, Olbia) and Sicily (Palermo, Trapani). The Tremiti Islands are also served from Termoli.

The fleet comprises 10 ferries, including 3 freight vessels. Ships include the Rubattino, Nuraghes, Bithia, Moby Tommy, Moby Dada and Florio. The MS Athara, built in 2003, carries up to 2,700 passengers and 820 cars or 69 lorries. In the 1970s, Tirrenia ordered eight sister ships of the Poeta class from Fincantieri (Carducci, Petrarca, Leopardi, etc.), each for 1,000 passengers and 300 cars.

Between 1998 and 1999, four high-speed vessels of the Jupiter MDV 3000 class entered service for the Sardinia routes, carrying 1,800 passengers and 460 cars at speeds over 40 knots. On 21 June 2012, Tirrenia was privatised and taken over by Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione (CIN), formed by Moby, Clessidra, Negri and Izzo. Onboard, cabins, restaurants and service areas are available.
