Uwajima-Unyu Ferries is one of Japan's oldest ferry companies, with a history spanning more than 140 years since its founding in 1884. The company operates important ferry connections between the islands of Shikoku and Kyushu across the scenic Seto Inland Sea.
The main route connects Yawatahama on the island of Shikoku with the ports of Usuki and Beppu on Kyushu. The crossing to Usuki takes about 2 hours 25 minutes, while the route to Beppu takes about 2 hours 50 minutes. With several daily departures, the company offers a reliable alternative to the overland route via bridges.
The fleet consists of modern passenger and car ferries that carry both travellers and vehicles. The ships are optimised for efficient short-distance travel across the Inland Sea and offer a comfortable journey with views of the region's many small islands.
On board there are various seating areas, including traditional Japanese tatami rooms and regular seating. The ferries have snack bars, vending machines and observation decks. The service is typically Japanese in its efficiency, with punctual departures and a clean, well-maintained interior.
