The ferry port of Al Hoceima is on the Moroccan Mediterranean coast at the edge of the Rif mountains, in the town of the same name. It is one of the few ports on the Rif coast with scheduled services to Europe. A single route is served from here: to Motril on the Andalusian coast. Naviera Armas still lists it in its timetable, with up to 2 departures a day, but on only around one day of the week. The crossing takes around 5.5 hours. For travellers from the Rif this is the shortest link to Spain, without the detour via Tangier or Nador. Traffic is strongly seasonal: in the summer weeks, when the Moroccan diaspora travels home from Europe, there is far more of it than in winter, and processing takes correspondingly longer. Because this is an external border of the Schengen area, passport and customs checks are part of the journey in both directions. Go by the time on your ticket and expect to wait before the controls. Only the information the operator gives in your booking confirmation is reliable: there is no public terminal information about access and parking at the port.
