Astypalea ferry port serves the westernmost island of the Dodecanese, which lies in the Aegean between Amorgos and Kos with its narrow waist and therefore hangs on both the Cycladic and the Dodecanese networks. From here you can reach 19 destinations, among them Kalymnos, Kos, Rhodes and Aegiali on Amorgos. Together the services run up to 39 departures a day, and crossings take between 1.5 and 14.5 hours. Twelve services run only in season. The port is served by Blue Star Ferries and Dodekanisos Seaways.
Getting there and the terminal
Astypalea has two berths, and this is exactly where travellers come unstuck. The old harbour is at Pera Gialos, directly below the chora with its castle. The newer port of Agios Andreas is around six kilometres outside the chora. Which of the two a ship uses depends on the vessel and the timetable. Clarify this with the operator or the local agent before you travel, and plan on a vehicle or a taxi for the trip to the new port. Arrive without that information and you may well end up at the wrong quay.
