The Avalon ferry port is on Catalina Island in the United States, a good hour off the coast of Southern California. From here you can reach 4 destinations, including Long Beach, San Pedro LA and Dana Point. Together the connections add up to as many as 30 departures a day, with crossings taking between one hour and 1.5 hours. The port is served by Catalina Express and Catalina Flyer.
Getting there and the terminal
Boats dock at the Cabrillo Mole, the ferry terminal at the edge of Avalon Bay. It has lockers and toilets, and a baggage service that delivers suitcases to hotels and holiday rentals. Taxis wait for every arriving ferry; otherwise you go on foot — Avalon is small, and walking is the normal way to get around here.
Worth planning for: there's no car ferry to Catalina and no car hire on the island. Only businesses and a few residents are permitted to drive full-size vehicles; visitors hire golf carts by the hour. So you arrive as a foot passenger and leave the car on the mainland.
Check-in
Catalina Express requires you to be checked in and ready to board with ticket in hand at least 30 minutes before departure. The gates close five minutes before departure, after which boarding ends. The company asks passengers to be at the terminal an hour beforehand. For the Catalina Flyer, check-in opens an hour and boarding 30 minutes before departure.
