Ayvalık

Town port

Location
Ayvalık, Balıkesir

The ferry port of Ayvalık is in the province of Balıkesir on the Turkish Aegean coast, around 200 metres from the town centre. From here you can reach Mytilene on Lesbos, the Greek island opposite. Up to 5 departures a day are in the timetable; in summer the ferry runs daily, in winter less often. The crossing takes around 1.5 hours. The port is served by Turyol. The journey crosses an external EU border: without a valid travel document you will not get on board.

Getting there and the terminal

The berth is on the quay in the middle of Ayvalık, and check-in is handled at the operator's harbour office. Turyol has no car park of its own there: it points to the municipal car park around 50 metres away, where you leave the car if you are crossing on foot. If you take a vehicle to Greece you need a Green Card, and for a car that is not your own a notarised authorisation from the registered keeper as well.

Check-in

Turyol requires you to be at the harbour office at least one hour before your booked departure. An online voucher is not a boarding pass: only at the office are your passport details recorded, any visa checked and check-in completed. Police and passport control follow, for which you should allow more time on summer weekends. Arrive late and you stay behind on the quay.
