Buenos Aires is the starting point for ferries across the Río de la Plata to Uruguay. From here you can reach Colonia del Sacramento in around 1.25 hours, Montevideo in about 4 hours and Punta del Este in a good 5.25 hours. All three destinations are served daily, and together the routes add up to as many as 42 departures a day. They are run by Buquebus and Colonia Express. That makes Buenos Aires one of the few ferry ports in the world where an international service runs at the frequency of local transport.
Getting there and the terminal
Check-in is not handled centrally but by each operator. For its sailings, Colonia Express gives the address Av. Elvira Rawson de Dellepiane 155 in Puerto Madero Sur, in the southern part of the redeveloped dock district near the city centre; the desk is staffed daily from 6:00am to 10:00pm. For Buquebus sailings the address on your ticket and booking confirmation applies. Check it before you set off and allow time for the way to the right quay: Buenos Aires is a city of millions, and the port area stretches a long way.
