Calheta, Calheta

Calheta lies on the south coast of the Azorean island of São Jorge. From here you can reach Angra do Heroismo on Terceira, Horta on Faial and Madalena on Pico. Together the routes add up to as many as 6 departures a day, and crossings take between 1.75 and 3 hours. The port is served by Atlanticoline.

Getting there and the terminal

The berth is managed by Portos dos Açores, the regional port authority, which lists it as Porto da Calheta with a passenger terminal of its own. More important for planning, though, is another point: São Jorge has two ferry ports, both of them in the register of Azorean ports, Calheta and Velas. Which of the two a ship calls at depends on the route, not on where on the island you want to go.

A ticket to São Jorge is therefore not automatically a ticket to Calheta. Check which port is in the timetable before you book, and arrange hire car, pick-up or accommodation accordingly. Arrive at the wrong port and you have a drive right across the long, narrow island ahead of you.
