The ferry port of Chios is in the island capital of the same name in the north-eastern Aegean, within sight of the Turkish coast. From here you can reach 15 destinations, among them Cesme, Mytilene and Agios Kirikos, plus Piraeus, Samos, Patmos, Lemnos and the offshore Oinousses. Together the services add up to as many as 41 departures a day, and crossings take between 15 minutes and 16.75 hours. The port is served by Hellenic Seaways, Ido, Makri Travel and Turyol.
Getting there and the terminal
The port sits in the middle of the town, and from the quay you walk straight into the old town. According to the port administration, the taxi rank is ten metres from the passenger terminal, the bus station 200 metres, and it is two kilometres to the airport. The terminal is staffed around the clock all year and has waiting areas; the municipal tourist office of Chios is based at the port as well. The berths are laid out for ships up to 200 metres long, with water depths of up to 6.5 metres.
Check-in
For the Greek domestic routes, Hellenic Seaways states one hour before departure, with or without a vehicle. On the service to Çeşme, border control comes on top, and the Turkish operators are stricter: Turyol wants 90 minutes' lead time with a vehicle and 20 minutes on foot, while Ertürk states one hour for all passengers and closes check-in 30 minutes and boarding 15 minutes before departure. Go by the earlier figure and carry your passport.
