Location
Folkestone and Hythe, Kent, England

Folkestone in Kent is not a ferry port in the strict sense: from here the Eurotunnel shuttle train takes you and your vehicle through the Channel Tunnel to Calais. There are up to 94 departures a day and the journey takes around 30 minutes. That frequency and the short journey time make Folkestone the fastest way of getting to France with your own vehicle.

Getting there and the terminal

The terminal is right on the M20. Take junction 11a, signposted LeShuttle and Channel Tunnel, stay in the right-hand lanes and drive straight on to passenger check-in. Do not follow your satnav blindly: Eurotunnel warns that some devices lead to the wrong entrance and explicitly advises against navigating to the postcode CT18 8XX or to Terminal Service Road. The terminal building has shops, places to eat and an area for dogs travelling with you.

Check-in

You can check in no earlier than four hours and no later than one hour before your booked departure. At check-in you are dealt with at a desk or use a machine and are given a hanger for your windscreen: the letter on it marks your departure on the display boards. Border controls follow, so have your passport ready. Loading starts 25 minutes before departure. You must have submitted the passenger details for everyone travelling 24 hours before the journey, otherwise you will be held up at the controls.
