- Freeport Harbour (Grand Bahama Port Authority)
Freeport ferry port lies on Grand Bahama in the north-west of the Bahamas, around 108 kilometres from Palm Beach in Florida. From here you can reach Fort Lauderdale. A ferry leaves up to 2 times a day. The crossing takes around 3 hours. The port is served by Balearia.
Getting there and the terminal
The city's main port is run by the Grand Bahama Port Authority, the company that has also administered the Freeport free trade zone since the Hawksbill Creek Agreement of 1955. The ferry service runs to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale and is operated by Baleària with the fast catamaran HSC Jaume II. A passenger-only vessel, then, not a classic car ferry.
Besides the ship, Freeport can be reached through the Grand Bahama International Airport, which handles domestic flights to the other Bahamian islands as well as services from the USA and Canada. Most hotels are not in the centre of Freeport but in the coastal suburb of Lucaya. So plan for the trip between your accommodation and the port rather than counting on a walk.
