The ferry port of Gothenburg is in Sweden, with the berth in the Masthugget district near the city centre. From here you can reach Frederikshavn in Denmark and Kiel in Germany. Together the services add up to as many as 10 departures a day. Crossings take between 3.5 and 15.5 hours. The port is served by Stena Line. Frederikshavn is the daytime crossing of the Kattegat, Kiel the overnight sailing.
Getting there and the terminal
Gothenburg has two ferry terminals, and they are not on the same quay. The ferries to Frederikshavn leave from the Denmark Terminal on Emigrantvägen 20. By car you leave the E6 at exit 75A and follow the E45 west along the river; the entrance is around 600 metres past the terminal building. Trams 3, 9 and 11 stop at Masthuggstorget. The ferries to Kiel depart from the Germany Terminal on Elof Lindälvs gata; trams 3 and 9 take you to Chapmans Torg, from where it is about five minutes' walk. The Denmark Terminal has short-stay and long-stay parking, and the Germany Terminal has spaces in front of the building, which can flood in heavy weather.
Check-in
On both routes Stena Line closes check-in 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. For Frederikshavn it opens 90 minutes before departure for vehicles and 45 minutes before departure for foot passengers. Important if you are without a car: for departures outside the opening hours of the Denmark Terminal, there is no way to board on foot.
