The ferry port of Hirtshals lies at the northern tip of Jutland and is Denmark's gateway to Norway and to the Faroe Islands. From here you can reach 5 destinations, among them Kristiansand, Larvik and Bergen, plus Stavanger and Torshavn. Together the services add up to as many as 24 departures a day, and crossings take between 3.25 and 40 hours. The port is served by Color Line, Fjord Line and Smyril Line. From Torshavn the Norröna continues to Seyðisfjörður in Iceland.
Getting there and the terminal
Hirtshals has two separate check-in areas, and they are not next to each other. Color Line handles departures at the Færgeterminalen on Norgeskajen 2, while Fjord Line and Smyril Line use the Nordsøterminalen at Containerkajen 4; the Fjord Line vehicle check-in is at the end of Sigurd Espersens Vej. By car you follow the E39 to Hirtshals and then the signs for your operator. By train you travel from Aalborg via Hjørring, from where the local line takes around 22 minutes to Hirtshals; the train and bus stops are about ten minutes' walk from the Color Line terminal, and a shuttle bus runs to the Nordsøterminalen. Parking at the Nordsøterminalen is tight, and Fjord Line points to spaces in the town.
Check-in
Color Line opens check-in two hours before departure and closes it 15 minutes before departure; with or without a car you should be ready at the latest 60 minutes before departure. Fjord Line is the strictest: one hour beforehand at the terminal, and you have to be on board at the latest 30 minutes before departure. The same hour of lead time applies to Smyril Line's long crossing to Torshavn.
