Holyhead ferry port lies on Holy Island in the north-west of Anglesey and is the most important Welsh port for Ireland. From here you can reach Dublin: a ferry leaves up to 16 times a day, and the crossing takes around 3.5 hours. The port is served by Irish Ferries and Stena Line.

Getting there and the terminal

The port lies at the end of the A55, which runs across North Wales; Irish Ferries also names the A5 as an approach road. For journey times, both operators reckon on around 1 hour 40 minutes from Chester, 2 hours from Liverpool, 2 hours 20 minutes from Manchester and 3 hours 15 minutes from Birmingham. Stena Line handles passengers at Stena House on Station Street, postcode LL65 1DQ; Holyhead station is at Terminal 1 and can be reached from there. Irish Ferries gives the postcode LL65 1DR for its terminal area and points out that the terminal is closed between 03:00 and 05:45. Up to 20 minutes are free for dropping off and picking up, and for longer stays there are two paid car parks.

Check-in

With a vehicle you have to be checked in 30 minutes before departure with both operators. On foot, Stena Line is stricter and closes check-in as early as 40 minutes before departure, while 30 minutes is enough with Irish Ferries. Coaches need an hour's lead time with Irish Ferries.
