Kavala ferry port is the most important passenger port in Eastern Macedonia and the starting point for the islands of the northern Aegean. From here you can reach 14 destinations, among them Agios Efstratios, Agios Kirikos and Chios, plus Lemnos, Mytilene, Samos, Patmos and Lavrio in Attica. Together the services add up to as many as 26 departures a day, and crossings take between 4.25 and 26.25 hours. The port is served by Hellenic Seaways and SeaJets.
Getting there and the terminal
Ferries leave from the central passenger port "Apostolos Pavlos", Averof 1, in the middle of the city. Since freight traffic moved in 2002 to the Filippos II port at Nea Karvali, "Apostolos Pavlos" has served scheduled and cruise traffic, fishing and water sports; the port administration describes it as enclosed by the city. According to the same source, the taxi rank is 150 metres from the terminal, the bus stop 100 metres and the airport around 30 kilometres away. The port works around the clock all year, and there is free wi-fi, an ambulance station inside the port area and parking for coaches.
Check-in
Hellenic Seaways asks you to be in the boarding area at least one hour before departure; the same hour applies to vehicles in the waiting area, and otherwise the deadline in the local port regulations. Arrive late and you have no claim to a refund.
