Lerwick is the main town of Shetland and the archipelago's only ferry port with services to the Scottish mainland. From here you can reach Aberdeen and Kirkwall. Together the routes add up to as many as 4 departures a day. Crossings take between 5.5 and 12 hours. The port is served by Northlink Ferries.

Getting there and the terminal

The terminal lies on Holmsgarth Road (ZE1 0PR), one mile from the centre; on foot you are about 20 minutes away. A bus stops in front of the building, Lerwick bus station is less than a mile away, and taxis wait there. Lerwick Port Authority provides free spaces for short and long stays. For the long-stay spaces there is no guarantee, however, and you may not stay overnight in the short-stay car park.

Check-in

NorthLink opens check-in two hours before departure and closes it 30 minutes before departure. With a vehicle you have to be checked in one hour before departure. Bookings and changes are better dealt with outside these times, because queues build up at the desk then.
