The ferry port of Lochboisdale lies on the south-east coast of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides and is the island's main link to the Scottish mainland. From here you can reach Mallaig. Ferries leave up to 2 times a day. The crossing takes around 3.5 hours. The port is served by Caledonian MacBrayne.
Getting there and the terminal
The address is Caledonian MacBrayne Ferry Terminal, Lochboisdale, HS8 5TH. Do not expect a large building or a large car park: there are six drop-off and pick-up spaces in front of the terminal, and accessible bays less than ten metres away. The bus stop is opposite the harbour, and two local taxi firms run on request. Inside the terminal there is a ticket desk, a waiting area, toilets, baby-changing facilities and free Wi-Fi. The nearest petrol station is a quarter of a mile away, the cash machine 300 metres, and the nearest shop is in Daliburgh a good three miles away. Stock up before you set off.
Check-in
Caledonian MacBrayne expects vehicles 45 minutes before departure and foot passengers 30 minutes before. The desk is not staffed continuously: from late March to mid-October it opens Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturdays until 3pm and Sundays only until noon.
