The Long Beach ferry berth is on the east coast of Pulau Perhentian Kecil, the smaller of the two Perhentian Islands in Malaysia. From here you can reach Kuala Besut Jetty on the mainland, with a boat leaving up to 30 times a day. The crossing takes around 45 minutes. The berth is served by Perhentian Boat Services and Perhentian Sunny Travel.
Getting there and the terminal
Long Beach, Pasir Panjang in Malay, is the busiest beach in the island group and the place backpackers and divers head for. There is no fixed quay: the speedboats usually drop you straight on the beach, and in heavy swell you change to a smaller boat that covers the last few metres. Pack your luggage accordingly. A jungle path leads across the narrow island to the quieter Coral Bay on the west coast, about a quarter of an hour on foot. There are no roads and no cars, so for longer distances you take a water taxi. The marine park conservation fee is paid before the crossing at the jetty in Kuala Besut. The season runs from March to October; from November to February the monsoon brings heavy seas and most businesses close.
