Madalena ferry port lies on the north-west coast of Pico and is the island's link to the rest of the Azores archipelago. From here you can reach 4 destinations, among them Horta on Faial, Velas on São Jorge and Angra do Heroismo. Together the services run up to 28 departures a day. Crossings take between 30 minutes and 5 hours. The port is served by Atlanticoline.

Getting there and the terminal

Unlike many island ports, this one does not require a journey first: Portos dos Açores, the operator of the Azorean ports, gives the distance from the berth to the centre of Madalena as 200 metres. Restaurants, shops and a taxi rank are therefore within walking distance, as is border control. If you come by car, you will find marked parking areas for cars at the port and a separate area for coaches. Pico's airport is about seven kilometres away.

The port is designed for vessels up to 50 metres long; larger ships have to stay in the roads. That is irrelevant for the ferry traffic in the channel between Pico and Faial, as the Atlanticoline vessels come alongside the quay directly. The operator gives no fixed check-in window for Madalena: the timetable lists a separate boarding deadline for each departure, which you should look up before you travel.
