The ferry port of Malmo is in Sweden, at the southern tip of the country opposite Copenhagen. From here you can reach Travemünde in Germany and Swinoujscie in Poland. Together the services add up to as many as 8 departures a day. Crossings take between 8.25 and 9.25 hours. The port is served by Finnlines. Both routes save you the detour over the Danish bridges and the overland drive through Jutland.
Getting there and the terminal
The Finnlines berth is not near the old town but in Norra Hamnen, the northern port area on Lappögatan 3B. From the north you come in on the E20 and E6, from the east on the E22; follow the ship symbols towards Hamnen or N Hamnen, then along Västkustvägen and on via Spillepengsgatan, Hemsögatan and Renögatan to Lappögatan, which leads straight to the terminal. From the city centre the route runs via Västkustvägen and Flintrännegatan. Without a car you take bus 32 from the main station to the Malmö Norra Hamnen Verkö stop, which is right next to the terminal; a taxi from the main station likewise takes only a few minutes.
Check-in
Finnlines opens check-in around two hours before departure and closes it about one hour beforehand. The operator gives no separate deadlines for vehicles and foot passengers, so the hour before departure applies to both. Because the terminal lies well outside the city centre, allow generously for the journey there.
