The ferry port of Mesta is in the south-west of Chios, around 35 kilometres from the island's main town and a good four kilometres north of the village of Mesta, whose name it carries. Until 1976 it was called Passalimani. It is the island's second most important port: ships leave here for Piraeus and Lavrio, for Sigri on Lesbos in 2.5 hours, and for Limnos, Agios Efstratios and Kavala. Together the services add up to as many as 12 departures a day, and crossings take between 2.5 and 11.75 hours. The port is served by Hellenic Seaways and SeaJets.
Getting there and the terminal
The facility is young: the municipal port authority of Chios completed it in 2015. Two moles of 150 metres each, water depths of up to eight metres, a passenger terminal with covered waiting areas, a security service and round-the-clock operation. There is a bus stop right by the terminal but no taxi rank; it is 33 kilometres to Chios airport. If you arrive without your own vehicle, build the bus firmly into your plans rather than counting on finding one at the quay.
Check-in
In its conditions of carriage Hellenic Seaways requires you to be in the boarding area at least one hour before departure, with a vehicle or without.
