Terminal Fluvial Puerto de Montevideo, Ciudad Vieja

The ferry port of Montevideo lies in Uruguay, on the northern shore of the Río de la Plata. From here you reach Buenos Aires. Up to 20 departures a day are listed and the crossing takes around 4 hours. The port is served by Buquebus and Colonia Express.

Getting there and the terminal

The passenger terminal is called Terminal Fluvial Puerto de Montevideo and, according to Buquebus, lies in the historic core of the Ciudad Vieja, at the start of the harbour rambla. That is unusually convenient: the berth is not on the edge of town behind the container port but within walking distance of the old town. Buquebus describes it as easy to reach from any point in the city, via the access roads, along the rambla or by public bus. The terminal building is a modern structure with large glazed areas, and the check-in areas are signposted.

Check-in

Buquebus opens check-in two hours before departure and closes it 25 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Those two hours are not a cautious recommendation: the trip to Buenos Aires is international travel, and there is a border check inside the terminal. Bring a valid travel document and the papers of everyone travelling with you; if you are taking a car, also present the vehicle documents and the loading ticket. You cannot get back to your vehicle during the crossing, so take out everything you need beforehand. Web check-in is available and speeds up the process.
