Newcastle ferry port is not in the city itself but a good ten kilometres downstream at the mouth of the Tyne: DFDS refers to the port at North Shields, and the berth belongs to the borough of North Tyneside, next to the Meadow Well district. From here you can reach Amsterdam, although on the Dutch side the ferry ties up at IJmuiden. A ferry leaves up to 2 times a day and the crossing takes around 15.75 hours. The port is served by DFDS.
Getting there and the terminal
DFDS names Percy Main and Meadow Well as the nearest Metro stations. There is also a Go North East transfer bus from the city centre that you can add to your booking: it leaves Bewick Street opposite Newcastle Central Station at 14:30 and 15:30, and the journey usually takes 20 to 30 minutes. By car you leave your vehicle in the Port of Tyne's secure car park at the terminal, protected by barriers and video surveillance around the clock; you pay in the terminal building. Taxis wait at the port.
Check-in
Check-in closes 45 minutes before the scheduled departure, for vehicles and foot passengers alike. For sports cars and lowered vehicles, DFDS recommends checking in at Newcastle by 15:00 at the latest.
