Portoferraio ferry port lies in the north of Elba in Italy and is the main gateway to the island. From here you can reach Piombino on the Tuscan mainland and Cavo in the north-east of Elba. Together the connections add up to as many as 80 departures a day. Crossings take between 15 minutes and one hour. The port is served by Blu Navy, Moby Lines and Toremar.
Getting there and the terminal
Moby Lines simply gives the Stazione Marittima in 57037 Portoferraio as its address and points out that the port is signposted from the edge of town onwards. Check-in is electronic and takes place on the apron directly in front of the ship, not at a desk inside the building: you join the queue and stay in your vehicle. All travellers, including minors, need an original valid identity document. Weapons, knives, bows, harpoons and martial arts equipment are expressly prohibited before the security check, which comes up more often than you might think on an island full of diving and fishing holidaymakers.
Check-in
With a vehicle, Moby Lines requires 90 minutes' lead time before departure. Without a vehicle, half an hour is enough from October to May, but a full hour from June to September. In high season that figure is no formality: on peak days the port handles a dense service to Piombino, and the entrance to the port area backs up accordingly.
