Punta del Este sits at the southern tip of Uruguay, where the Río de la Plata opens into the Atlantic. From here you can reach Buenos Aires. The connection runs up to 6 times a day. The journey takes about 5.25 hours. It is operated by Buquebus and Colonia Express.

Getting there and the terminal

One thing to know before you book: the ships do not leave from Punta del Este. Buquebus crosses the Río de la Plata to Colonia del Sacramento and to Montevideo; Punta del Este is linked to those ports by bus, and the two legs together make up the travel time of just over five hours. The departure point in Punta del Este is therefore not a ferry terminal but the bus station on Avenida Gorlero at the corner of Calle 32, where Buquebus has a counter; a second sales point is at Carlos A. Curbelo airport on Ruta 93. For this journey you do not need to go to the port of Punta del Este at all. Build the bus ride into your timings and do not cut the connection too fine: the combination is a single through ticket, but the change happens at the port terminal in Colonia or Montevideo.
