The ferry port of Rio Marina lies on the east coast of Elba in Tuscany. From here you can reach Piombino on the mainland and the small island of Pianosa. Ships sail to Piombino up to twelve times a day, to Pianosa on only around one day of the week. Together the services add up to as many as 14 departures a day. Crossings take between 45 minutes and 1.75 hours. The port is served by Toremar.
Getting there and the terminal
The ferry berth is at Calata dei Voltoni 52 in the middle of Rio Marina. The Toremar sales point sits at the harbour. You do not have to head for a desk, though: check-in is handled electronically on the forecourt in front of the ship, and you are processed there whether you are travelling by car or on foot.
Check-in
Toremar requires you to be in the boarding area at least 30 minutes before departure, every time. After that your place is no longer guaranteed. All travellers, including minors, must present a valid original identity document.
