The ferry port of Roatan is on Roatan in Honduras. From here you can reach La Ceiba on the mainland and the neighbouring island of Utila. Together the routes run up to 10 departures a day. Crossings take between an hour and 1.25 hours. The port is served by Dream Ferries and Safe Way Maritime.
Getting there and the terminal
The berth is not in the island's main town of Coxen Hole but in Dixon Cove, between Coxen Hole and French Harbour. Safe Way Maritime runs the Carl O. McNab terminal there, opened in 2006; before that, operations ran for twelve years in the middle of Coxen Hole. If you come by car, there is a generous free parking area with its own security service. The building has ticket desks, check-in machines for tickets bought online, air-conditioned and open waiting areas, a cafeteria, toilets, a cash machine and a bank branch. Dream Ferries is on the same bay on the main road through Dixon Cove; that terminal is staffed from 5.30 to 18.00.
Check-in
Safe Way Maritime requires all passengers to report at the terminal at least an hour before departure. Arrive later and you risk your place. For the early departure to La Ceiba at 7.00 that means being at the desk just after 6.00. The second departure of the day is at 14.00, and the sailings in the other direction leave La Ceiba at 9.30 and 16.30.
