- Fort Bay, Capt. Leo Chance Pier
Saba's ferry port is in the Caribbean Netherlands. From here you can reach Philipsburg on Sint Maarten. Up to 6 ferries leave each day. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. The port is served by Great Bay Express.
Getting there and the terminal
The berth is called Fort Bay and lies on the south coast. It is the island's only harbour: Saba drops steeply into the sea all the way round, and there is no second way in. The ferries tie up at the Capt. Leo Chance Pier, alongside a fishing pier and a tender pier for visiting yachts. Before the first pier was built in 1972, people and goods came ashore over the 800 steps cut into the rock at Ladder Bay.
That does not yet put you in the village. A single road leads from the harbour about one and a half kilometres uphill to The Bottom, the main settlement, and on to Windwardside. The climb on foot is steep and long; taxis wait at the pier instead. At the harbour itself you will find the office of the Saba Marine Park, where arriving boats and yachts report in, plus a dive centre, a decompression chamber, two bars, a restaurant and the island's only petrol station. Customs and immigration are also handled at Fort Bay.
