- Pelabuhan Balohan
The ferry port of Sabang lies on Pulau Weh in Indonesia, the country's northernmost island. From here you can reach Aceh. Ferries leave up to 6 times a day. The crossing takes around 45 minutes. The port is served by Express Bahari.
Getting there and the terminal
The berth is called Balohan, and it is not in Sabang. The town that gives the port its name sits at the north-eastern tip of the island, while the port is around 15 kilometres further south in a deeply cut bay on the east coast. So if your itinerary says Sabang, you first arrive somewhere you do not want to stay.
On the mainland side the ships leave from Ulee Lheue, the ferry port of Banda Aceh, about seven kilometres from the city centre. Two classes of vessel serve the route: the fast boat in a good hour and the slow ferry in around two and a half hours. Only the slow ferry takes cars and motorcycles; the fast boat carries foot passengers and, for a surcharge, bicycles.
There is no public transport on Pulau Weh. Taxis, shared minibuses and ojeks, the motorcycle taxis, wait at the pier in Balohan; the trip to the beaches at Iboih in the north-west of the island takes about an hour. The desks in the terminal open 45 minutes before departure.
