- Location
- Sola, Rogaland
The ferry port of Stavanger lies in Rogaland on Norway's south-west coast. It carries the town's name but is not in the town itself: the ferries leave from Risavika in the neighbouring municipality of Sola, around ten kilometres from the centre. From here you can reach Bergen, Kristiansand and Hirtshals in Denmark. Together the services add up to as many as 8 departures a day, and crossings take between 5.5 and 16.5 hours. The port is served by Fjord Line.
Getting there and the terminal
Fjord Line uses the Utenriksterminalen in Risavika harbour, Kontinentalveien 31 in Tananger. From the centre of Stavanger it is 20 to 30 minutes by car: you take the E39 towards Sandnes and Kristiansand and then turn onto the 509 towards Tananger, Risavika and Sola airport. Without your own vehicle you get into the centre of Stavanger by taxi or by scheduled bus; factor that journey time into your planning, because walking is not an option on this stretch. Passengers park free of charge at the terminal for 72 hours, activated by a QR code at check-in.
Check-in
On the international route to Hirtshals you can check in up to 60 minutes before departure. For the Norwegian route to Bergen a deadline of 30 to 60 minutes applies, depending on the booking. There is one peculiarity for late departures: if you check in after 19:00 and are travelling on foot, you board across the vehicle deck because of the LNG bunkering. At weekends the terminal is only staffed early in the morning and in the evening, and during the week in the daytime as well.
