Stockholm lies where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea and is Sweden's most important gateway to Finland and the Baltic states. From here you can reach 6 destinations: Mariehamn and Långnäs on Åland, Turku and Helsinki in Finland, Tallinn, and Visby on Gotland. Together the services add up to as many as 28.5 departures a day, and crossings take between 6.25 and 17 hours. The port is served by Tallink & Silja Line and Viking Line.
Getting there and the terminal
Stockholm has two ferry terminals, and they are on opposite sides of the city centre. Tallink & Silja Line sails exclusively from Värtahamnen in the north-east, Hamnpirsvägen 10, 115 74 Stockholm. The nearest metro station is Gärdet on the red line towards Ropsten, and signs lead from there to the terminal; bus 76 also stops at the port. The operator additionally runs its own shuttle between the terminal, City-Terminalen and Djurgården, which takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. Parking near the terminal is arranged through Stockholm Parkering.
Viking Line, by contrast, berths at Stadsgården on the south side of the Saltsjön: Stadsgården, Tegelvikshamn, 116 30 Stockholm, berths 163 and 164. Head for the wrong port and you will have to drive right across the city, so check which operator is on your ticket before you set off.
Check-in
At Tallink & Silja Line, check-in closes 30 minutes before departure and boarding ends 20 minutes before departure. What matters in Stockholm is the exception the operator makes for Åland: if you are taking a vehicle to Mariehamn or Långnäs, you have to be checked in as early as 1.5 hours before departure.
