Getting there and the terminal

The terminal is on Ferry Road in Stromness. Arriving by bus is easy: the stop is opposite the terminal and is served by Stagecoach. Kirkwall is around 16 miles away, Kirkwall airport around 19 miles. It pays to know the difference when parking: at the terminal and by the Ferry Inn there are short-stay spaces with a ticket machine, while free long-stay parking is at the Ferry Road Car Park and the Old Academy Car Park. Orkney Ferries' boats to Graemsay and Hoy also leave from the same harbour.

Check-in

Northlink Ferries opens check-in in Stromness 90 minutes before departure, and only 60 minutes ahead for the 06:30 sailing. At every port it closes 30 minutes before departure, and after that no one else is taken on board. Drivers go to the signposted check-in booth, while foot passengers use the desk in the terminal.
