Symi's ferry port is in Gialos, the harbour basin of the Dodecanese island of the same name. From here you can reach 18 destinations. The busiest service runs to Rhodes: a 75-minute crossing with up to 19 departures a day. Panormitis at the other end of the island is reached in 30 minutes, and to the north lie Kalymnos, Kos and Leros. Together the services run up to 59 departures a day, and crossings take between 30 minutes and 15.25 hours. Five operators call at the port, among them Blue Star Ferries, Dodekanisos Seaways and Hellenic Seaways.
Getting there and the terminal
The ferries tie up in Gialos, right on the waterfront row with its neoclassical houses, the customs building and the clock of 1881. You reach the upper village of Chorio from the harbour by a stone staircase of around 500 steps. A local bus runs between Gialos, Chorio and Pedi; a separate bus goes to the monastery of Panormitis. Taxis wait at the harbour.
Check-in
Blue Star Ferries expects you in the boarding area an hour before departure, on foot as well as with a vehicle. Paper tickets are issued by the port agency up to two hours before departure at the latest.
