Tarbert

Town port

Location
Tarbert, Western Isles, Schottland

The ferry port of Tarbert is on Harris, the mountainous southern part of the island of Lewis and Harris, and so in the Outer Hebrides, in the Scottish council area of the Western Isles. The berth is right by the village. From here you can reach Uig on Skye. There are up to 4 sailings a day and the crossing takes around 1.75 hours. The port is served by Caledonian MacBrayne. For Harris this is the link to the south: to get from the Outer Hebrides to the Scottish mainland you travel via Skye, which has had a fixed road bridge for many years.

Check-in

For the Uig - Tarbert route Caledonian MacBrayne gives two deadlines: with a vehicle you must be at the terminal 45 minutes before departure, while on foot 30 minutes is enough. Neither figure is a recommendation; both are the point at which check-in closes. Arrive later and you must expect your reserved space on board to be passed on, or to be refused carriage altogether. On a route with few sailings a day that can mean an entire travel day lost, which is why a generous buffer pays off here.
