Ports and terminals
Bilbao
Town port
The ferry port lies 15 km from the town it is named after.
- Terminals
- Fährterminal bei Zierbena (Brittany Ferries nennt keinen Terminalnamen)
- Location
- Zierbena, Autonome Gemeinschaft Baskenland
The ferry port of Bilbao is in the Basque Country in Spain, but not in Bilbao itself: Brittany Ferries operates from Zierbena, around 20 kilometres from the city centre. If you navigate to the Guggenheim Museum you are in the wrong place. From here you can reach Portsmouth in England and Rosslare in Ireland. Together the services add up to as many as 4 departures a day. Crossings take between 28.5 and 29.5 hours. The port is served by Brittany Ferries.
Getting there and the terminal
By car you leave the A8 motorway at exit 130, signed Portua-Santurtzi, and then follow the Ferry signs. Without a car it gets more awkward: the nearest metro station is in Santurtzi, about three kilometres away, and the Cercanías suburban train stops there too; you cover the last few kilometres by taxi. A shuttle bus runs between the terminal and the Guggenheim Museum in the city centre. You can park both short and long term, with separate areas for motorhomes and for people with disabilities. On foot you board not by a gangway but by a lift.
Check-in
Brittany Ferries expects you at check-in at the latest 45 minutes before departure. If a pet is travelling with you, you have to be there 90 minutes beforehand. Factor the drive out of Bilbao into your planning, especially as the departures are spread across only a few days of the week.
